To the Editor, Trachyonychia, also known as 20-nail dystrophy or rough nails, is characterized by surface roughness and opacity of the nail due to extensive longitudinal ridging [1–3] . The condition may be idiopathic or associated with eczema, lichen planus, psoriasis, or alopecia areata [1–3] . Although spontaneous resolution can be expected in trachyonychia, aggressive treatments are necessary in severe cases [1–3] . Here, we report a case of spongiotic trachyonychia successfully treated with topical corticosteroids using the paper tape occlusion method. A 45-year-old man presented with dystrophic changes of all fingernails and toenails that had started 2 years earlier. He was otherwise healthy and had no medical history of significant skin diseases, including psoriasis, lichen planus, or alopecia areata. Topical bioavailability of triamcinolone acetonide: effect of occlusion.

BACKGROUND/AIMS Occlusion by covering the skin with an impermeable wrap enhances skin hydration, affects drug absorption and can induce the formation of a drug reservoir within the stratum corneum. This is desired in local therapy with topical corticosteroids. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of occlusion before (experiment 1) and after (experiment 2) application on the penetr...

[Allergic contact dermatitis and systemic contact dermatitis in a patient with polysensitization to topical corticosteroids].

Although allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to corticosteroids is a well-known and relatively common phenomenon, the systemic administration of corticosteroids only rarely produces skin reactions (systemic contact dermatitis [SCD]). We present the case of a patient with ACD to various corticosteroids, and who subsequently developed SCD to multiple systemic corticosteroids. A 47-year-old man ...

Evaluation of the vasoconstrictive effects of topical steroids by laser-Doppler-perfusion-imaging.

Corticosteroids are one of the most frequently prescribed local therapeutic treatments. Their potency and bioavailability are tested with different methods. One of the most accepted methods is the skin-blanching test designed by McKenzie. In this study we investigated whether the skin-blanching test designed by McKenzie for screening topically active corticosteroids, producing vasoconstriction,...
